Prints and patterns are a great addition to any wardrobe, whether you prefer to go with a more professional look or you opt for a super casual boho appearance every day. But there are certain rules that you need to adhere to if you plan on mixing various patterns and prints together. After all, you want to achieve a look that makes sense, and you want everything to come together perfectly. So what are the simple rules you should follow when mixing prints and patterns? Keep reading to learn more.

Focus on Matching Colors
First thing's first: rather than focusing on matching prints, focus on matching colors instead. Basically, if the colors you put together look great together, you can pretty much mix prints together and they will look great together too. When it comes to matching colors, you have a lot of freedom to match your personal tastes, but a good staple to include in your wardrobe, and a good place to start, is a black and white combination.

Space Out Patterns
Spacing out the patterns that you choose to wear is a great way to mix them together without causing an overwhelming appearance. For example, rather than wearing a patterned top over a patterned skirt, create some space by adding a solid top to your patterned skirt but then accessorizing with a patterned scarf. If you love boutique online shopping, you are bound to find plenty of patterned accessories that you can use to achieve this objective.

In addition to adding some solid pieces to your outfit, another way to space out your patterns is by using just one pattern on the top half of your body and a pattern on the bottom half. So, for example, you can use a printed skirt and a printed crop top, but you shouldn't add a printed jacket over that crop top because that could be a little too much and make the outfit look far too busy.

Stick with Simpler Prints
Sticking with graphic prints, as well as simpler prints in general, makes it a lot easier to mix them up without clashing them. Good examples are stripes, such as a classic black and white striped top that will go with just about anything. You can even pair these simpler patterns with more complex prints, like animal prints or floral patterns, but you do need to be careful about making the outfit look a little too busy. Generally, pairing more complex patterns with one another is more difficult and frustrating, so sticking with simpler patterns is definitely a lot less daunting.

Now that you know just a few of the basic rules associated with mixing prints and patterns, you can let your imagination run wild and you can show off your favorite patterns and prints wherever you go. Remember to not overdo it and you will definitely appear fashionable while displaying your own unique taste in fashion.
